Innovation is the dominant theme in today’s economy and equity markets—and will likely remain so for the next few decades. However, equity investors are not realizing the true potential of this theme. Risk-based and behavioral-based biases, which have caused investors to misprice and underestimate innovation, have resulted in the “Innovation Premium,” a corollary to the “Value Premium.” In fact, the existence of the Value Premium itself is likely explained by the displacement risk of innovation. At the same time, the modern technological revolution represents a revolution of the mind, akin to prior centuries’ revolution of the muscle. Companies that capitalize on these technological breakthroughs offer exponential growth potential. Investors cannot afford to leave return on the table; as such, in this discussion we explore how investors can best harness the Innovation Premium and the disruptive power of technology in their portfolios.

Brian Foerster drives investment and market insights for the firm’s growth, international, and global equity capabilities. In this capacity, he directs original research on relevant investment and market topics and communicates insights from this research — as well as portfolio strategy and outlook — to investors, including institutions, consultants, research analysts, and financial advisors. Mr. Foerster also engages with institutions to understand their evolving investment objectives. He participates in equity product development to ensure Lord Abbett is offering competitive solutions to meet the long-term goals of our clients and prospects.

Mr. Foerster began his career at Lord Abbett in 2012. Before joining Lord Abbett, he served as Capital Market Strategist for Invesco, Ltd., where he worked closely with financial institutions to identify customized investment solutions. He also worked as an Investment Analyst with ING Investment Management. He has been in the financial services industry since 1995. Mr. Foerster earned a BA in Economics and English from Boston College and is the holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) designation.
