MSCI just added China A-shares in its emerging market and global indexes.  BlackRock began investing onshore in China in 2012 and will be in to shed light on the early-movers’ advantage:

• BlackRock believes the MSCI inclusion of China A shares into indexes (3.4% of MSCI EM Index by November 2019, per MSCI announcement in March 2019) may provide a strong tailwind from index buyers
• Given low current foreign ownership (less than 4%) significant capital is likely to move into China
• Relative to China’s economic relevance, China is under-represented within client portfolios
• Both the economy and equity markets are becoming more shareholder friendly

BlackRock will elaborate on applying an active quant approach in China:

• Potential ideal ground for Big Data and Machine Learning tools
• New sources of information available
• Technology such as machine-reading and AI are required for this unstructured information
• Quant in combination with traditional approaches may provide powerful results

HENRY SHEN, Active Equity Strategist within Systematic Active Equity, BlackRock

Henry Shen, Director, is a senior investment strategist within BlackRock's Systematic Active Equity (SAE) group. He is responsible for the growth of SAE's investment platform, with primary focuses on China-A, Asia Pacific, and Global Equity strategies. 

Prior to his current role, Mr. Shen was a member of BlackRock's Asia ex-Japan Institutional Client Business group, responsible for developing and maintaining institutional relationships with clients and prospects in Taiwan and China.  Before joining BlackRock in 2012, Mr. Shen was a researcher at the Duke Medical Center and the University's Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is a published author for the Journal of Biomechanics.

Mr. Shen studied Biomedical Engineering and Economics, and received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Duke University.
